Students & Parents,
This school year will be the most challenging we have ever experienced - plain and simple. Learning in this hybrid model will be difficult for us all, and I imagine we will have some hiccups and speed bumps along the way. That being said, I believe that, as a team, we can take precautions and behave accordingly in order to maneuver around those issues. Here are the main requirements of the protocol that will be adhered to in my classroom: 1. Masks MUST be worn at all times inside the main classroom or the laboratory. This is not negotiable. To ensure that students may still hydrate and snack, my storeroom will be made available for those purposes. During a short trip to the storeroom mid-class, students may remove their mask, drink/eat, and replace their mask - quickly. This privilege may be revoked if students misuse it: wasting too much time, phone usage, consistent spillage/mess. 2. Cell phones and ear-buds, in concert with building requirements, MUST be put away during ALL times. This is not negotiable in almost all circumstances unless it is a legitimate health issue (i.e.: student with diabetes has an app that monitors intravenous insulin pump). If you have questions as a parent, please email me at [email protected]. If a student is seen with their phone out in class, they will immediately be sent to the office, wherein the phone will be confiscated, placed in a plastic bag, and returned to the student at the end of classes. Kind of a hassle just to see a Snap, right? NOTE TO PARENTS: You can still communicate with your children during the school day if absolutely necessary! They will have their email page open constantly during classes, and Gmail has a Chat feature! Much like Instant Messenger (back in the day), you can quickly send and receive messages online. Use it rather than phones! To do this, you must have a Gmail account. They're so easy to make! 3. Upon entering the classroom, students will be required to take an assigned seat, which will be posted over the projector upon entering the classroom on the first day. Through the course of the semester, the arrangement of specific students may change, but a solid six-foot radius will be kept around each desk, forming the CDC-suggested buffer. 4. Most learning will continue to take place electronically using Google Chromebooks provided by the District. Assignments, quizzes, tests, links, and activities will be posted on Google Classroom, allowing for efficiency while students are home on their off days or present in class. Be sure to check your Google Classroom page daily in order to stay updated on your assignments' due dates and for changes that may need to occur. 5. KEEP YOUR CHROMEBOOK CHARGED AND TREAT IT WITH RESPECT. There will be extremely limited charging availability in the physical classroom in order to adhere to social distancing guidelines and district-provided technical support during this pandemic may take time and delay students' work, causing undue stress for all parties involved. Therefore, charge your Chromebooks nightly, handle them with care, and make sure to fully shut them down at least once a week. Don't download anything you shouldn't either. We're already dealing with enough viruses as it is. 6. THIS ONE IS SUPREMELY IMPORTANT!!!! Work hard. While you are physically in class, pay attention, ask questions, write/type notes, and plan ahead. With three days at home, students will need to make time to work on the assignments from our class. Time-management is difficult to master - I'm still getting the hang of it. Yet it is absolutely essential during this circumstance in order for students to truly learn and achieve. I can help with students' organization of time, if desired. That's about it for the most important bits. Make sure to check your class syllabus upon receiving it for more information regarding the class content, rules and protocol, and contact information. We can do this, everybody. Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay happy. See you in class!
